BLOG The Paver Restoration Process: Clean, Resand, Seal — and Why It Matters Apr 01, 2025

At Sunstone Construction, we believe your outdoor spaces should look as good as they function — and properly maintained pavers are a huge part of that. Over time, grime, algae, and shifting joints can wear down the beauty and performance of your patio or walkways. That’s where our paver restoration process comes in.

Here’s how we bring life back to tired pavers:

1. Hot Water Washing

We start by deep-cleaning the surface using a high-pressure hot water system. Unlike cold water pressure washing, hot water helps break down and lift stubborn stains, grime, algae, and organic buildup — without the need for harsh chemicals. It’s the first and most important step to prep the pavers for the next stages.

We also target the joints between pavers during this step, removing old, deteriorated sand and clearing space for a fresh, stronger fill.

2. Resanding the Joints

Once the surface is clean and dry, we apply fresh jointing sand. For most projects, we use Polysweep by SEK, a high-performance polymeric sand that locks pavers in place while resisting weed growth and erosion.

We spread the sand evenly over the surface and use a roller compactor to vibrate it deep into the joints, ensuring a tight, uniform bond. This step is crucial — poor sanding can lead to movement, washout, or premature wear.

3. Sealing the Surface

Finally, we seal everything with a premium product like Surebond Wet Look Sealer, which enhances color and texture while protecting against water, oil, and UV damage.

Sealing also helps lock in the sand and keeps your patio or walkway looking sharp for years to come. Whether you’re going for a natural matte finish or a bold, wet look — the right sealer makes a huge difference in both aesthetics and durability.

Why It Matters

This full restoration process doesn’t just clean your patio — it extends its lifespan, improves drainage, and makes it much easier to maintain in the future.

If your pavers are looking dull, uneven, or overgrown, this could be the reset they need.
