BLOG The Benefits of Permeable Patio Systems — And How They’re Built Right May 22, 2025

At Sunstone Construction, we’re constantly exploring better ways to build outdoor spaces that are beautiful, durable, and sustainable. One of the best systems we've found to do that? Permeable patio construction. Whether you’re dealing with drainage issues or looking for a more eco-conscious solution, permeable pavers are a rock-solid option — and Techo-Bloc has been leading the charge in researching and refining how these systems work.

What Is a Permeable Patio System?

A permeable patio system is built with specialized pavers and a layered base that allow water to pass through the joints and into the ground below. Instead of creating runoff, the system helps manage rainwater naturally — reducing stress on your yard, your home’s foundation, and even local storm drains.

Unlike traditional concrete or compacted base patios that push water to the edges, permeable systems are designed to let water flow right through — all while looking just as sharp and modern as any other paver system.

Why Go Permeable?

1. Natural Drainage = Less Runoff

With Southeast Michigan’s wet springs and heavy summer downpours, stormwater management is a real concern. Permeable patios reduce runoff by soaking water into the ground, helping prevent erosion, pooling, and property damage.

2. Eco-Friendly Solution

Permeable systems help recharge local groundwater and minimize pollution from runoff entering lakes, streams, and storm drains. It’s a smart step toward a more sustainable backyard.

3. No Need for Complex Drainage Systems

Because water drains through the patio itself, there’s often no need for extra French drains or underground piping — simplifying construction and preserving your landscape.

4. Freeze-Thaw Resistance

Properly built permeable bases help reduce the risks of frost heave by allowing water to drain away from the patio surface quickly. This keeps your pavers more stable and helps avoid cracking or shifting over time.

5. Aesthetics That Don’t Compromise

From Techo-Bloc’s Blu 60 and Mika lines to Villagio accents, you don’t have to sacrifice style for function. These systems look just like high-end patios — because they are.

How We Build It: The Permeable Process

At Sunstone, we follow a tried-and-true process based on Techo-Bloc’s best practices to ensure our permeable patios stand the test of time:

Step 1: Excavation

We start by excavating a full 16–20 inches below grade (depending on site needs), removing any organic material and prepping for the multi-layered base.

Step 2: Subgrade Preparation

The subsoil is graded for proper flow and compacted. In certain cases, we’ll install drain pipes or daylight outlets to help water exit the system efficiently.

Step 3: Geotextile Fabric

A durable woven fabric is laid across the subgrade to prevent soil mixing with the clean stone base — a crucial step to keep the system functioning long-term.

Step 4: Open-Graded Stone Base

We install a deep layer of clean, angular stone (typically ¾" clear stone) in compacted lifts to create void space for water storage and drainage. This also provides incredible structural support.

Step 5: Bedding Layer

A 1" layer of ASTM #8 angular bedding stone (not sand) is screeded on top for a smooth, stable surface to lay pavers.

Step 6: Paver Installation

We install your chosen Techo-Bloc pavers with ⅛"–¼" gaps, which are then filled with clean #8 or #9 aggregate instead of polymeric sand to allow drainage.

Step 7: Edge Restraint & Finishing Touches

Edge restraints are locked in with fiber-reinforced concrete or specialized permeable edging. The entire surface is then compacted into place for a finished, professional look.

Is a Permeable Patio Right for You?

If you’ve got poor drainage in your backyard, or you simply want a more environmentally responsible option, a permeable patio system might be your best move. These patios check every box — function, form, and longevity.
